"It's just morning sickness."  You will probably hear this often if you suffer from pregnancy nausea when you feel weak and throw up regularly. Well, it's all right for them to say but when you are the one who is going through it, then the word ‘just' is a little bit insulting.

Morning sickness can range from mild and a slight inconvenience to so strong that it necessitates lifestyle changes. For about 1% of pregnant women, it can become life threatening when it develops into a condition called hyper emesis gravid arum.  No matter what the magnitude of the condition, it is often difficult to find sympathy and support from doctors who tend to trivialize it.  "It's only morning sickness." Some health care professionals even conside

r that constant complaints of feeling unwell are only calls for attention and that the woman should just ‘get on with it'

Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy affects over 70% of women. Of those, more than half suffer from nausea and vomiting and about 25% suffer only from nausea. Nausea is usually experienced twice a day while many can experience three or more episodes. Of the women who work, over 30% of them need to take time off because of their condition. Despite the number of women affected by morning sickness, the condition is not well researched or well documented.

Pregnancy is not only a time of physical change and challenges but also one of psychological change. There are so many expectations both on side of the parents-to-be as well as society in general. This can make dealing with the physical unpleasantness of morning sickness even more difficult. Pregnant women are supposed to radiate good health and have shiny hair and glowing cheeks. If this doesn't describe you, then you feel as if you are already failing the test of being a good mother – and the child hasn't even been born yet!

What is important for every pregnant woman to know is that each pregnancy is unique and what applies to one woman does not necessarily apply to another. One woman may shine, another may wilt – but that's okay. One may suffer from morning sickness, another may not – but that's normal. Taking ginger will help some women who suffer from nausea while others will be repulsed by it.

What is not okay is to accept the ‘just morning sickness' diagnosis. Demand to be taken seriously or find another doctor who will give you the respect you need during this time of physical and psychological change and adjustment.
