ZAMBIAN reggae artiste Maiko Zulu has been invited to perform at the Fair Play for Africa campaign festival which takes place today in Durban, South Africa.
The Fair Play for Africa is a campaign concerned with the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) on quality health care for all. In an interview with the Weekend Post, Maiko said the event would be a great opportunity for him not only to strengthen his fan base, but also to advocate for better living conditions of people. “It's an opportunity for me to send the message that I have been striving to send over the years and as an activist, I have to take issues to people,” said Maiko. And Oxfam regional essential services adviser for Southern Africa Pooven Moodley who are the organisers of the festival said the concert will be free and will be held at King Zwelithini Stadium, one of Durban’s official public viewing areas in Umlazi. Moodley said the festival is one of the many Fair Play for Africa events in South Africa and nine other countries in Africa to promote African government delivery in expanding access to quality health care. “It is being driven by over 200 African civil society organisations in 10 African countries. The festival gives us the possibility to reach out to thousands of football fans in the greater Umlazi and Durban area and create awareness on health issues and access to health,” Moodley said. He said the festival and the Fair Play for Africa Campaign goes much further than a one-day event: it is truly aimed at and geared towards leaving a lasting legacy of health. “We are just five years away from the deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the goals that nearly all international governments have set to halve poverty and increase access to health by 2015. It is also the target year for African governments to fulfill their promises of spending 15 per cent of national budgets on adequate health care provision,” he said. Zulu is expected to perform alongside South African urban-jazz-house band the Revealers headed by Jenerik Soulz.
