My pact is with Zambians — RB PDF

PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda has said he is in a pact with the Zambian people and will not be swayed away from the development agenda by people insulting him.

Mr Banda said his pact, unlike that of the Patriotic Front (PF) and United Party for National Development (UPND), was aimed at bringing people together and foster development.

Addressing scores of people who welcomed him at Chief Mwanachingwala’s palace grounds in Mazabuka yesterday President Banda said he was a leader for all Zambians irrespective of their tribe, race or religion.

He said Zambia needed leaders who preached peace, love and unity instead of promoting hatred.

President Banda said even if his critics had continued to insult him, he would not respond but instead be focused on matters of national development.

“I am focused and my eyes are on the ball with the Zambian people, I will not answer back.

“My pact is intended to bring people together so that we can build this nation, we want to remove the culture of insults. Join our pact, it is a voluntary pact and its leadership is clear, there is only one leader,” he said.

Mr Banda said it was unfortunate that the PF/UPND pact was intended to remove him from office in 2011.

He said it was up to the Zambian people to decide on who should lead them as it was their constitutional right.

The president said MMD was a national party which had representation in all the
provinces and districts, and urged party members not to be greedy but embrace others so that the country could be developed.

Meanwhile, Mr Banda said Zambia was on the right path to economic development and called for more hard work among the citizens.

He said the Government would next year ensure that adequate fertiliser to the farmers was delivered on time.

The Government would also ensure that there was a ready market for farmers’ crops.

Mr Banda was in Mazabuka at the invitation of Chief Mwanachingwala of the Tonga people.

He was accompanied by Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Felix Mutati, Livestock and Fisheries Minister, Bradford Machila and MMD parliamentary chief whip, Vernon Mwaanga.

The president also met members of the business community, farmers and other traditional leaders from Southern Province.

Speaking earlier, Southern Province MMD chairperson Solomon Muzyamba said the party in the province was working hard to change the style of politics.

Mr Muzyamba said people who had left the MMD to join other political parties were now returning to the fold.

More than 100 UPND members yesterday defected to the MMD.
Southern Province Minister Daniel Munkombwe said those who wanted to challenge President Banda at the MMD convention would be “suffocated by political pressure”.

Mr Munkombwe said people who wanted to challenge Mr Banda would not be barred from the convention.

And Chief Mwanachingwala commended the Government for taking several development projects to his chiefdom.

He said the road network leading to his chiefdom had been rehabilitated and would contribute to the development process in the area.

Chief Mwanachingwala was speaking during a meeting with President Banda and several headmen from his chiefdom at his palace.

“Thank you for the development you have brought to our area. You (President Banda) have demonstrated that you are for the people,” he said.
He said Mr Banda’s visit to his area demonstrated that he was a humble leader.

He urged President Banda to take care of former heads of State and said second Republican president Frederick Chiluba was an innocent person who had been cleared of allegations of plunder of national resources by the courts of law.

Chief Mwanachingwala said Zambia had an independent judiciary which should be allowed to operate freely.

The chief urged the Government to sink more boreholes in the more than 220 villages in his chiefdom.

President Banda said he was impressed with Chief Mwanachingwala’s selfless leadership.

“I am impressed with your leadership. It is a mark of a good leader who is always concerned about what you can offer for the people,” he said.

Mr Banda said he agreed with the chief that the population in Mazabuka had grown and there was need for a high school and hospital to be built.

Chief Mwanachingwala gave President Banda three cows as a mark of their friendship.
Meanwhile, President Banda said respect for elders was paramount in any society and that those aspiring for leadership should learn to respect others.

Mr Banda wondered why some people were bent on insulting others when they too wanted to become leaders.

He was speaking when he met with the business community at Chief Mwanachingwala’s palace.
